As chamber music goes, it’s not often that a group celebrates its tenth anniversary, let alone its fortieth. So it goes with the Canadian Brass – five men who burst on to the scene in 1970, introducing the world to the brass quintet, almost unheard of at the time. Although there have been personnel changes along the way, the core of the group remains the same, with Chuck Daellenbach on tuba and Gene Watts on trombone. For a group that is no stranger to breaking new ground, the fact that their concerts still sell out and CDs continue to top the charts four decades after they formed is a feat that has been matched by few other chamber music ensembles.
The Canadian Brass’ association with Yamaha has been long and productive. Recently renewing the partnership between the two organizations, Yamaha is excited to celebrate their own 40th anniversary in Canada, opening a Yamaha retail store in Winnipeg in 1969 before moving to the Toronto head office in 1976.
Coming up, the Canadian Brass will present the keynote address at the Ontario Music Educators Association conference “Con Brio” in November 2009 and they’ll spend time at the Yamaha booth to meet the many fans that they’ve inspired over the years. Welcome Chris!
