MacombThe 41st annual International Horn Symposium was held at Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL on June 2-7, 2009.  Horn players from all over the world converged on the site to study various aspects of horn playing, visit exhibits from instrument makers, as well as attend clinics, masterclasses, and performances by international guest artists.

Yamaha horn artist Jeff Nelsen was among the list of distinguished guests at IHS, and he performed a recital which garnered rave reviews from audience members and colleagues.  Jeff was proud that one of his many Yamaha-playing students, 19-year-old Everett Burns, won the Young Artist solo competition.  As part of Everett’s prize, he attended a special masterclass with Yamaha international artist Hiroshi Matsuzaki, principal horn in the NHK Symphony Orchestra.

Jeff also participated in Yamaha Corporation of America’s Young Performing Artist programme (YYPA), which recognizes outstanding young musicians from all different genres.  Thousands of aspiring performers have participated in this event, and it has launched the careers of many successful musicians working today.  Jeff recently shared his thoughts on the YYPA and what sets Yamaha apart from the competition:

I just wanted to send a quick note to rave about the YYPA event I participate in every year. I'm on the panel for horn, but this year I was the featured artist as well. Congratulations on a fantastic event. At least 1,000 kids were at the final concert, seeing the finalists perform.

The finalists get to perform for the most incredible audience I've seen. The performers experience what it’s like to be rock stars! The whole event creates an experience for the musicians (finalists, and audience members seeing people near their age on stage) that can change their life forever.

Thank ou for all Yamaha does for music performance and music education! I’m honored to be a part of it.

Jeff Nelsen is a member of the Canadian Brass, associate professor of horn at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and world-renown soloist. He performs on a gold-plated YHR667VS.
